ABOUT LANCE
Lance Gandy has been a practicing photographer since 1989 and an avid surfer for 5 years prior to that, but it wasn't until 2003 that he seriously started combining the two. "There were a number of things that happened that lead me to finally taking surf photography on the Gulf Coast seriously", Lance states. "Perhaps the most important being the digital SLR. I had wasted a lot of film over the years trying to get surfing photos that I was proud of, seldom with any real success. Once I bought a dslr it allowed me to spend a lot of time honing my craft, without wasting film and of course money. Something else that happened at that same time is that I was inspired. People like G. Scott Ellwood and Mike Boyd were doing incredible photography just down the coast from me, and I wanted to get those kind of shots in Galveston. Finally I wanted something to do when the surf was still pumping, but my body was done. That's actually been the best part. Standing on the beach or jetty, my daughter playing by my side, friends coming up to chat, sometimes it's just as good as being in the water." Since then Lance has been published in everything from local surfing periodicals, to newspapers, to fashion magazines. His work is shown in museums, galleries, offices and homes, throughout the state. "I absolutely love knowing people are enjoying my work. The idea that people hang a part of me in their home is so humbling."
